About Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by overdevelopment of male breast tissue. It is
common at any age and may result from hormonal changes, hereditary factors, certain
diseases, or the use of specific medications (such as those used by bodybuilders).
This condition can cause emotional discomfort and lower self-esteem. Gynecomastia may
involve:
- Excess localized fat.
- Overdevelopment of the glandular tissue.
- A combination of fat and glandular tissue.
- Unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides) enlargement.
Is This Procedure Right for Me?
This is a highly individualized procedure that should be done for yourself, not to meet
others' expectations. You may be a good candidate if:
- You are physically healthy.
- You do not smoke or smoke very little.
- You have realistic expectations.
- The excessive breast development has stabilized.
- You feel uncomfortable with the appearance of your chest.
Planning Your Surgery
During your initial consultation:
- I will ask about your reasons for seeking male breast reduction surgery.
- I will evaluate your overall health and inquire about any medications you take.
- I will also ask about your family history of cancer.
After examining the size, shape, and skin quality of your chest, I will carefully listen to
your concerns and expectations. I will explain the techniques best suited to your needs,
along with the associated risks and costs. Your case will be documented to provide reference
points before, during, and after surgery.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
The surgical technique will depend on the size and shape of the breast tissue. The steps
include:
- Anesthesia: The procedure may involve intravenous sedation with local
anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery. I will
recommend the best option for you.
- Surgical Technique:
- For mild cases, liposuction may suffice. This involves two small incisions,
approximately 5 mm long, at the armpit area.
- For moderate to severe cases, excision is recommended. This involves a
spindle-shaped incision around the nipple. In some cases, liposuction is
combined with excision.
- Closure: The incisions will be closed, resulting in minimal visible
scarring.
The results of the surgery will be immediately noticeable. However, swelling and bruising may
last for up to four weeks. The final shape can be assessed around the eighth week.
Important Information
- Most patients are discharged on the same day, though some cases may require an overnight
hospital stay.
- Mild discomfort is expected but can be managed with prescribed medication.
- Open communication is essential, so feel free to ask any questions.
Recovery
- You will need to wear a special compression garment for at least three weeks, day and
night, and then at night only to reduce swelling and support faster healing.
- Sutures will begin to be removed after seven days and will be completely removed within
10 to 14 days.
- Temporary reduced sensitivity in the chest and nipple area is normal and usually
resolves within approximately eight weeks.
Your Results
The final appearance of your chest will become evident around six weeks post-surgery.
Initially, scars will appear pink and firm but will fade and become nearly invisible within
six months.
The results of your surgery are permanent, provided you maintain a stable weight and a
healthy lifestyle. You’ll be thrilled with your rejuvenated and confident new look!
