Application of Botulinum Toxin

The First Step!
Choose a Surgeon You Can Trust

Selecting a plastic surgeon certified by the Mexican Board of Aesthetic, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery and a full member of the Mexican Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is essential. These qualifications indicate that the surgeon is well-trained and up to date in their field. If they meet these criteria, you can trust them. Botulinum Toxin Type A—BOTOX® or DYSPORT®—is a medication that reduces muscle activity. This property has been clinically utilized to treat various neurological conditions.

About the Treatment

Botulinum Toxin Type A—BOTOX® or DYSPORT®—works by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter necessary for muscle contraction. For several years, this toxin has also been used in the field of aesthetics.

Physicians who initially used the medication to treat conditions such as facial paralysis, migraines, dystonias (abnormal muscle contractions), blepharospasms (involuntary eyelid spasms), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and strabismus observed that their patients not only experienced improvements in their conditions but also appeared younger. These repeated outcomes led to the cosmetic use of the medication, which, when applied to specific points on the face, reduces exaggerated facial expressions, preserving the skin, minimizing wrinkles, and slowing the natural aging process.

Botulinum Toxin Type A—DYSPORT® is a brand of this medication that relaxes muscles to diminish wrinkles and facial lines, achieving a more youthful appearance. It is typically applied to areas with prominent expression lines, such as the forehead, crow’s feet, and between the eyebrows. It is also used to elevate or reshape the eyebrow arch according to the facial oval.

The application is performed in the doctor’s office, and patients can return to their usual activities immediately afterward. The effects last approximately 8 to 12 months.

This medication does not replace surgery but delivers excellent results in preserving skin and decelerating the aging process in younger individuals.

Plastic surgeons often include this procedure as part of post-surgical treatments following endoscopic brow lifts, facelifts, or eyelid surgeries, helping to sustain results for much longer and achieve remarkable benefits.

Important Information:
  • The effects of this treatment are temporary and last between 8 to 12 months.
  • It is considered a safe and effective treatment, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1989.
  • As a precaution, it is not administered to pregnant women.
  • This medication should only be applied by a specialist physician who understands the facial muscular structure. An inexperienced person could inadvertently damage a nerve, leading to facial paralysis or eyelid drooping (ptosis).
