Chin Surgery (Genioplasty)

The First Step: Choose a Surgeon You Can Trust

Selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon ensures safe and successful results. Look for a surgeon certified by the Mexican Council of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and a full member of the Mexican Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. These qualifications ensure your surgeon is well-trained and up-to-date on the latest techniques.

About the Chin

The chin is an essential anatomical feature of the face. It contributes to the personality and character of certain facial types. Noticeable chin irregularities are particularly evident and can affect the overall harmony of the face.

The Surgery

Before surgery, I will evaluate your local anatomy and assess potential issues in other areas, such as misaligned bites, nasal deformities, or deficiencies in the cheekbones. A specialized X-ray may be required. Based on these findings and photographs, we will discuss any detected issues and the available treatment options.

The surgical approach will depend on your anatomical characteristics and whether this procedure is combined with other facial surgeries:

  • The incision can be made inside the mouth (in the lower labial groove) or in the submental crease below the chin.
  • The incision is short, typically 3–4 cm in length.

Based on the planned modifications, I may:

  • Insert a silicone implant.
  • Perform bone cuts in the mandibular region to achieve the desired aesthetic changes.

If the chin correction is the only procedure being performed, local anesthesia with sedation is often sufficient. In this case, you will remain conscious but drowsy, and the surgical area will be completely numb. If the procedure is combined with other cosmetic surgeries, general anesthesia may be required.

After Surgery

If this is the only procedure performed, you will be able to walk and move around on the same day as your surgery. Post-operative instructions include:

  • Following a soft or liquid diet for the first few days.
  • Expecting mild pain and swelling in the operated area, which can be managed with prescribed medication.

Temporary numbness in the skin of the lower lip and chin may occur but usually resolves within a few days or weeks. Most patients can return to their regular activities within a week, provided they avoid strenuous physical exertion or sports.

Your New Look

Most patients are highly satisfied with the results of chin surgery. These procedures result in a significant aesthetic improvement, enhancing facial harmony, especially in balance with the nose. The outcomes are natural-looking and can greatly enhance your confidence.
