Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Reduction Mammoplasty

The First Step!
Choose a Surgeon You Can Trust

Selecting a plastic surgeon certified by the Mexican Board of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery and a full member of the Mexican Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery ensures that your surgeon is well-trained and up-to-date, giving you confidence in your choice.

Who Are Candidates for Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is typically performed to achieve physical relief rather than purely aesthetic improvement. Most cases are done after a woman’s breasts are fully developed. However, it can be performed earlier if excessively large breasts are causing serious problems.

The best candidates for breast reduction are healthy, emotionally stable women who understand the possibilities of the procedure and have realistic expectations. Breast reduction can enhance both appearance and self-esteem.

What Should You Know About Breast Reduction?

Women with large breasts often experience medical problems such as back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, and even breathing issues. Additionally, bra straps can cause unsightly indentations in the shoulder area. Breast reduction is designed to help these women achieve smaller, better-proportioned breasts that align with the rest of their body.

Planning Your Surgery

During your first visit:

  • Be open and honest about your expectations.
  • I will examine and measure your breasts while you are seated and standing.
  • Your case will be documented for reference during and after surgery.

I will explain factors that may influence your results, such as your age, breast size and shape, skin quality, and whether implants may be beneficial. I will also explain how the nipple and areola will be repositioned higher on the breast (to a natural position) and adjusted to be equidistant from the inframammary fold.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

You will typically stay in the hospital for one day following surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia, allowing you to sleep through the procedure. The surgery takes approximately 2–3 hours and involves the following steps:

  1. Incisions outline the area of skin, breast tissue, and fat to be removed and define the new position of the areola.
  2. Excess skin and breast tissue are removed, and the nipple and areola are relocated to a higher position.
  3. Skin from above the nipple is moved downward and joined to reshape the breast.
  4. Sutures are placed around the areola and along a vertical line extending from the nipple to the inframammary fold. These are hidden under the skin and are therefore invisible.
  5. In cases of very large breasts, additional horizontal incisions (anchor-shaped scars) may be required.
Recovery

After surgery:

  • You will need to wear a special bra full-time for the first two months.
  • Your breasts will be swollen and bruised, and you may experience mild discomfort for 1–2 days. Any pain will be managed with prescribed medication.
  • Your first menstrual period after surgery may cause temporary breast pain or swelling.
  • Temporary numbness in the nipples and breasts is common and usually resolves as swelling subsides, typically within six weeks. However, some mild discomfort may persist for up to a year.
Your New Look

Among all surgical procedures, breast reduction is one of the most transformative. You will immediately feel relief from the discomfort of heavy breasts, and your body will appear slimmer and more proportionate.

It will take time to adjust to your new appearance, and your family, partner, and friends may also need time to adapt. Be patient with yourself and those around you. You’ll be delighted with the results!
