Breast Augmentation

The First Step!
Choose a Surgeon You Can Trust

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon ensures safe and satisfying results. Look for a surgeon certified by the Mexican Council of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and a full member of the Mexican Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. These qualifications demonstrate the surgeon’s expertise and commitment to the highest standards of care.

Who Are Candidates?

Breast augmentation enhances your figure and self-confidence. The best candidates for this procedure are women who are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts and seek improvement rather than perfection. Before deciding on this procedure, carefully consider your expectations and discuss them with me. If you are physically healthy and have realistic expectations, you are an ideal candidate.

What Should You Know About Breast Augmentation?

Technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, this surgical procedure enhances the shape and size of a woman’s breasts for various reasons:

  1. To improve body contour for personal reasons, especially if you feel your breasts are too small.
  2. To restore breast volume lost after pregnancy.
  3. To correct asymmetry between the breasts.
  4. As part of breast reconstruction following surgery.
Planning Your Surgery

This is a highly individualized procedure tailored to meet each patient’s specific needs. During your first visit:

  • I will evaluate your health and recommend the most appropriate techniques based on your breast and skin characteristics.
  • I will explain the different types of implants available and help you choose the one that best suits your needs.
  • I will inquire about any medical conditions, such as smoking or hypertension, that could affect surgical outcomes.

We will discuss the surgical technique, type of anesthesia, procedure location, risks, and costs. Be open about your expectations, and I will provide a frank assessment of your options, along with the risks and limitations of each.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure. Most patients can return home the same day, though some conditions, such as hypertension or diabetes, may require additional monitoring and a longer hospital stay.

  • Anesthesia:
Most breast augmentations are performed under general anesthesia, allowing you to sleep through the procedure.
In some cases, local anesthesia with sedation may be used.
  • The surgery usually lasts 1 to 2 hours. There are several options for implant placement:

  • Under the breast tissue (subglandular): Less painful, but the implant may be easier to feel and could interfere with mammograms or cause capsular contracture.
  • Under the pectoral muscle (submuscular): May reduce the risk of capsular contracture and interferes less with mammograms, but recovery may involve more discomfort.

I will explain the pros and cons of each option to help you make an informed decision.

The procedure involves:

  1. Incision:
    • Incisions are made around the areola (periareolar), in the crease where the breast meets the chest (inframammary fold), or in the armpit (axillary), depending on implant size, placement, and other factors.
  2. Implant Placement:
    • A pocket is created under the breast tissue (subglandular) or under the pectoral muscle (submuscular), and the implants are positioned and centered relative to the nipples.
  3. Closure:
    • Incisions are closed, and scars will fade over time until they are almost invisible.
Recovery
  • You will be able to stand and move around within hours after surgery. Discomfort will be managed with prescribed medication.
  • You will need to wear a compression garment (with or without a band) for one month, after which you can switch to a regular bra.
  • You may experience a burning sensation in the nipples for 1–2 weeks, which will gradually subside.
  • Swelling will diminish within 3–5 weeks.
  • Most patients can return to daily activities within 3–5 days, depending on the level of physical exertion required.

Avoid excessive physical contact or stimulation of the breasts for 3–4 weeks. Scars will initially appear firm and pink for about six weeks before fading.

Your New Look

For most women, breast augmentation is a highly satisfying and empowering procedure that enhances their self-image. It is recommended to schedule regular follow-up appointments to detect and address any issues early.

Breast augmentation is a deeply personal decision, and not everyone will fully understand your choice. However, the most important opinion is your own. If you are realistic about your expectations, your surgery will be a success.
