The goal of burn treatment is to achieve complete recovery, encompassing both physical healing and reintegration into social and family life. Burn care is typically managed by a multidisciplinary team, often led by plastic surgeons.

What Does Burn Treatment Involve?

Burn care begins immediately after the injury and continues until full recovery. The severity of the burn is assessed to determine the type of injury and the extent of damage. Acute burn treatment primarily involves fluid resuscitation. Once the patient is stabilized, plastic surgeons focus on minimizing the damage caused by thermal injury.

Plastic surgeons may intervene using various treatment modalities, including:

• Outpatient Burn Assessment and Treatment: For less severe burns that do not require hospitalization.
• Surgical Cleaning and Debridement: Preparing the burn area by removing damaged or dead tissue to facilitate healing.
• Reconstructive Procedures: Techniques such as local flaps, regional flaps, free flaps (microsurgery), and skin grafts to repair and restore the affected area.
